Reception, year 1 and year 2
The government's school food plan provides funding for government-funded primary schools in England to offer a free lunch to every child in their reception classes, year 1 and year 2. So your child will receive a free lunch, should you choose one, until they move into year 3.
Year 3 and above
Your child may be able to get free school meals if you receive any of the following:
Applying for free school meals
We use the Department for Education's free school meals eligibility checking system, meaning you will receive an instant result notification, and the school will be informed.
To apply, you will be required to register and provide:
Check your eligibility and apply for free school meals
Currently all children entitled to free school meals will receive them until they finish either primary or secondary education. This continues even if your income increases. This is called transitional protection.
Access to this protection ended on 1 April 2025 so if you apply now and your earnings go above £7,400 net per annum (£616.67 per month), your child will no longer be eligible for free school meals. You will need to apply for them again if your income goes down.
If you'd like any further support, please contact the free school meals team, email checking@derbyshire.gov.uk or telephone: 01629 536481.
Some children prefer to bring sandwiches for lunch. We request that parents provide healthy lunch boxes for children and do not send sweets or fizzy drinks. As part of a child’s healthy lunch box, one small cake bar or small chocolate bar is acceptable. Please ensure that lunch boxes are also clearly labelled with your child’s name and discuss with your child the importance of bringing it home after each school day.
Children may bring in healthy snacks from home such as fruit, yogurt tubes or cereal bars to eat at morning break.
Children should bring a water bottle with them to school every day. Children should only have water in their bottle unless there is a medical reason for an alternative. We would recommend that bottles are clearly labelled.
