There is an act of worship every day, usually in the morning. This is generally a whole school event but some days we have class worship if this is more appropriate. Children can be excluded from worship on religious grounds.
Class organisation
The School is organised into three classes – Infant (Class 1), Lower Junior (Class 2) and Upper Junior (Class 3). In each class children experience a mix of whole class teaching, group work and individual work as appropriate. The children will be grouped to ensure their learning needs are met and they have opportunity to work alongside others while experiencing a range of learning contexts. Groupings will vary depending on, curricular content and the way it is delivered, availability of resources. Children may be grouped by; age, similar or mixed ability, experience, or a combination of these.
The Infant Class
Key Stage 1 (5 - 7 years.)
The Infant children (Reception, Years 1 and 2) are taught by two teachers, Mrs Forrest and Miss Collier, with the support of Mrs Challender or Mrs Lee. During their time in the Infant department the children will be taught by both teachers and supported by both teaching assistants. All staff work very closely together in planning the curriculum and assessing pupil progress. They work closely as a team.
The Junior Classes
Key Stage 2 (7 – 11 years)
The Lower Junior Class (Years 3 and 4) is taught by Mrs Haigh with Mrs Parker and Mrs Geer (Teaching Assistants)
The Upper Junior Class (Years 5 and 6) is taught by two teachers; Mrs Zimmermann and Mrs Ackernley . They are supported by Mrs Almond, Mrs Parker (Teaching Assistants), Mrs Copestake and Mrs Lee (SEN Teaching Assistants).
School Ethos:
We are proud to be a Church school and our close links with the Church Community strengthen and enrich our Christian Ethos. We strive to make Church Broughton Church of England Primary School a place in which all adults and children feel respected and valued so they can develop and enjoy learning. A happy, stimulating environment encourages high expectation and achievement. We actively encourage children to take responsibility for themselves and become increasingly independent. Our Positive Behaviour Policy ensures that good behaviour is openly praised and encouraged. We celebrate success and achievement at every opportunity.
Extra-Curricular
Activities
There are many extra-curricular activities in which the children can be involved. The school is involved in the School’s Music Partnership and is able to offer tuition in guitar, flute, clarinet, drums, and a range of brass instruments.
The staff also organise after school and lunchtime clubs. These vary throughout the year but generally run for blocks of 6, weekly sessions. These might include; football, cricket, basketball, recorder, junior and infant choir, craft and gymnastics. The school also arranges activities run by outside arganisations. The school participates in sports tournaments, puts on gymnastic and dance demonstrations. The school has strong connections with Church Broughton Golf and Tennis Clubs where many children practice after school.
We are always seeking to widen and vary the extra-curricular opportunities available to children.
School Visits
The school curriculum is enriched by visitors including; sports specialists, music groups, theatre companies and involvement by local residents. Day trips and visits are also planned to support the curriculum, motivate and inspire learners. The older children are able to participate in residential visits; building confidence, extending physical skills, and developing independence.
All children are encouraged to participate. Every reasonable effort will be made to be inclusive.
School does not make charges for day visits or trips, but may request a realistic voluntary contribution. Where the making of a contribution would cause problems for a family we are happy to support and may be able to subsidise the visit.
Attendance
Government regulations require that the School records the reason for every absence and distinguishes between authorised and unauthorised absence.
Each absence has to be classed as authorised or not authorised and School asks that parents notify them as soon as possible with the reason for absence. It is the parents’ responsibility to inform school of the reason for absence on the first day. If we have not received notice from you, a member of staff will need to telephone to enquire. This also provides some security for children on their journey to school. When your child returns to school after an absence, a written note is required to comply with Government regulations.
Our policy is always to encourage and support very good attendance.
Please avoid taking holidays in term time and particularly during assessment week in May. Leave of absence forms are available from the school should you need to seek authorisation for a holiday that must be taken in term time or any other unavoidable absence. (Appendix 1) Authorisation is not automatic and is limited by stringent government regulations.
Helping in School.
Many parents and other members of the community help the school on a regular basis. Many enjoy helping the children with many activities including; reading, maths, sewing, art, display or sport. Others provide support on a swimming rota or help with transport. Many play an active role on the Committee of Friends of Church Broughton School, organising and running fund-raising and social events. Whatever your talents or interests, you will be warmly welcomed into our School. Please see one of the teachers, the Head or the school secretary if you are interested. We actively promote the wellbeing and safety of our children and ensure all personnel have CRB or list 99 checks and are familiar with our child protection procedures.
School Uniform.
All children are strongly encouraged to wear school uniform. This consists of;
Day wear: grey or black skirt or trousers
gold polo shirt and burgundy sweat shirt, both with the school logo
black shoes or sandals in summer.
P.E. : Blue shorts, white tee-shirt
Pumps for indoor wear, trainers or pumps for outside
In winter, jogger bottoms and sweatshirt may be worn.
All jewellery must be removed for P.E.
Please ensure hair styles are tidy; long hair must be tied up for all physical activity.
School polo shirts and Sweat shirts can be bought from Ellis Outfitters, Station Street, Burton-on-Trent. Nearly new polo and sweat shirts are always available from school.
All clothes need to be obviously labelled.
Jewellery.
The school policy stipulates that no jewellery is worn by children in Key Stage 1 at Church Broughton School.
In Key Stage 2 a single pair of stud earrings and a watch may be worn. These must be removed for P.E. No body piercing, or fashion accessories are allowed. Should your child wish to wear a single piece of jewellery for religious reasons, please discuss this with the Head teacher.
Dinner Money.
Most parents choose to pay dinner money at the start of each half-term. The School informs parents of the next terms costs in advance. The cost is calculated for each child, taking into account any credits which the child may have accumulated over the previous half-term. Cheques should be made payable to DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL. If preferred, dinner money can be paid in cash or by cheque each Monday. Children should bring any money in a labelled purse or envelope.
If you think your child may be eligible for free school meals, please call and see the Head teacher or the School Secretary in confidence.
Parents are asked to ensure that their contact details are up to date at all times. If there are changes to any details please inform school as soon as possible. This is vital so that we may contact you if necessary.
Accidents or illness at school.
Medicines
We do not encourage children who are unwell to be sent to school but recognise that on occasions they may require medication during school hours.
The administration of medicines is the responsibility of parents and carers. Administration of prescribed medicines in school is available for pupils who are
- suffering from chronic illness or allergy
- recovering from short term illness and are undergoing or completing a course of prescribed treatment using prescription medicine.
Wherever possible we would encourage timing of medicine administration to avoid school hours. If this is not possible and your child does require medicine during the school day, this will need to be sent in original packaging with the pharmacists instructions clearly printed. Please contact the school office as soon as possible so the necessary permissions and consents can be signed.
Children requiring asthma inhalers should have these available at all times. They should be clearly labelled with your child’s name, contents and use by dates checked regularly. They are kept in classrooms for easy access.
Accidents in School
Any accident in school is recorded into the school’s accident book. If your child receives a head injury parents will be notified by telephone and receive an accident slip informing them of the incident and advice about possible reactions. Any major injuries would be dealt with by the school’s trained First Aider and parents informed immediately
Head lice
Regular checks should be made of your child’s scalp (once a week). Should your child’s scalp become infested please treat immediately. Guidance on treatment is available at school or your local chemist or health centre.

Child Protection
Church Broughton C of E Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
The school is required to take any reasonable action to ensure the safety of its pupils. In cases where the school has reason to be concerned that a child may be subject to ill-treatment, neglect or other forms of abuse, the staff and Head teacher are obliged to follow the Child Protection procedures established by the Derbyshire Area Child Protection Committee and inform the Social Services of the concern.
The child Protection Policy is available in the office should you wish to read it.
Lost Property
Please ensure all belongings are clearly named to minimise the upset and cost of items becoming lost. At the end of each term any unclaimed lost items will be disposed of after the children have been given the chance to claim their possessions.
Data Protection
Basic information about pupils is held on computer in compliance with National and Local Authority requirements and to assist with the efficient organisation of the school and the individuals’ educational needs. Security measures are taken to ensure that the information is kept confidential and is only available to authorised staff. It may be used for statistical purposes but this will not enable any individual to be identified. The school and the County Council have registered with the Data Protection Registrar details of persons to whom they may wish to disclose information. By law, under the provision of the Data Protection Act 1984, information may only be disclosed to other persons in accordance with this registration. Your school is registered to disclose personal information to:
Family, Relatives, Guardian Trustees
Past, Current or Prospective Employers
Legal Representatives
Doctors, Dentists, other Health Advisers
Department of Education & Science
Department of Social Security
Local Authority Education and Social Services
It is the policy of the Governors and Derbyshire County Council that such information is confidential and that, even where a need to disclose information has been registered, it will only be divulged in exceptional circumstances and will be kept to the minimum necessary to achieve the purpose. This policy is, of course, subject to any law which imposes a duty of disclosure on the Governors or Derbyshire County Council.
Pupils may also use computers in the classroom as part of their education, but they do not have access to the personal information records. If you are concerned about any aspect of personal information held on computer, please contact the Head teacher in the first instance or write to the Data Protection Liaison Officer, Education Department, Derbyshire County Council, County Offices, Matlock, Derbyshire DE4 3AG.
General queries and concerns
We welcome your comments and views about the school and encourage contact with parents.
If you have any concerns about your child or their education, the best course of action is to talk with your child’s class teacher, who is available most evenings after school. The Head teacher will also be available to discuss issues of concern. Meetings such as these are almost invariably enough to clarify any misunderstandings and enable parent and school to come to a shared understanding. You are always welcome to discuss issues with one of the Governors.
In the unlikely event of your not being satisfied with the outcome of such discussions, you may feel the need to make a complaint. A copy of the complaints procedure is available at the office or from the chair of Governors.
Transfer to Secondary School
Most of our children transfer at the age of eleven to John Port School in Etwall, which has Technology College Status.
Close links have been developed over the years and transfer preparation is now very thorough. Several visits are made by John Port staff throughout the child’s final year at Church Broughton. In the Summer Term the Year 6 children spend two days at John Port School, meeting their new teachers and their classmates. We see it as an important part of the Year 6 curriculum to develop independence and self-reliance in the children in preparation for their role as secondary school students. It is pleasing to note that they leave us having also attained an academic standard, which enables them to fit easily into their new classes.
We hope you find the information on this website helpful. If there is additional information you feel would benefit parents that is not included here, or have other comments to make about the website, its contents or presentation please speak to a member of our staff. Thank you for your interest.
